How to build an emergency fund that sticks
An emergency fund only works if you never have to think about it. Here is how to build one that quietly grows and stays put.
Everyone agrees an emergency fund is a good idea. Far fewer people have one that survives a rough month. The difference is rarely willpower. It is design.
Start smaller than feels serious
Three to six months of expenses is the classic target, and it is also the reason many people never start. It looks impossible, so it stays theoretical. Begin with one month, or even one week. A fund that exists and grows beats a bigger number you never reach.
Keep it one tap away, not one click away
An emergency fund should be reachable in a genuine emergency and slightly annoying to raid on a whim. A separate savings account works well. Cirrus shows the balance alongside everything else, so you always know the cushion is there without it tempting you daily.
Refill it before anything else
When you do dip in, treat topping the fund back up as the first goal, ahead of extra investing or discretionary saving. The habit of refilling is what turns a one-time buffer into a permanent one.
